Retractable Awnings for McLean, VA Homes

A retractable awning extends shade over your deck or patio when the sun is high and retracts out of the way when it is not. Patio Shades offers three SummerSpace lines – the Simple Shade Series, Performance Series and Pro Series – with motorized and manual crank-out options and Tempotest fabrics.

McLean homes put a lot of value on the backyard, and decks and patios that face south or west take strong afternoon sun through the summer. An awning turns that exposed outdoor space into a shaded, usable room on a July afternoon, then folds back when you want the evening sky. Choose stripes, solids or linen weaves to match brick, siding or stone, and see the full retractable awnings line for series details.

Motorized Awnings with Remote Control and Wind Sensors

Motorized awnings open and close at the press of a button on a remote, and some models offer an optional WiFi app for control from your phone. An optional wind sensor retracts the awning automatically when gusts pick up, so the fabric and arms stay protected if a storm rolls through while you are away from home.

If you are comparing motorized awnings for a home in Great Falls, Falls Church or Fairfax, our McLean office can walk you through the remote, app and sensor choices during a free consultation. Manual crank-out models are also available for a smaller patio or a porch where you only extend the canopy a few times a week.

Drop Screens and Porch Screens

Drop screens roll down from a housing above a porch, patio or pergola opening to block low sun and glare. Patio Shades carries exterior drop screens and the SummerSpace FlexShade screen system for porch screening, which keeps insects out of a covered porch, so the space stays usable through bright afternoons and summer evenings.

Screens pair well with a retractable awning: the awning handles overhead sun, and the screens handle the low angle that comes in from the side after 5pm on the west side of a house in McLean, VA.

Pergolas, Cabanas and Outdoor Living Space

Pergolas with retractable roofs and open-air cabanas create an outdoor living space that works in more weather than an uncovered patio. Add Tension Zip solar shades on top of a pergola’s sliding or louvered roof, or drop screens on the sides, and the same outdoor space serves for family dinners, shade and privacy.

A pergola is a good option when there is no wall to mount an awning on, such as a patio set away from the house. Browse our pergolas to see the retractable roof styles, then bring your yard dimensions to a free consultation.

Window and Door Awnings

Window and door awnings stop sun exposure before it reaches the glass. Interior window treatments block light after the heat is already inside; an exterior awning shades the window itself, which can help keep rooms cooler and lower cooling costs through a Northern Virginia summer.

Commercial Awnings for Tysons and McLean Businesses

Patio Shades supplies commercial awnings for restaurants, storefronts and offices. A fabric canopy over an outdoor dining area adds covered seating, a storefront awning gives the entrance a defined look from the street, and window awnings cut glare on an office front. Our office sits minutes from Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria.

Are motorized retractable awnings worth it for a deck or patio?

For an awning you plan to open and close most days, the motor replaces cranking with a button press, and an optional wind sensor retracts the canopy on its own when nobody is home to do it. Manual crank-out models suit a deck that gets occasional use. Both operations are available on SummerSpace awnings.

How do I measure for a retractable awning?

Our measuring guide walks through three numbers: the vertical wall space available for mounting, the width you want covered, and the projection, which is how far the awning extends out over the deck or patio. Take each one before you call, and we can match you to the right size and series.
